Mobilier de chambre à coucher : armoire en deux éléments
This wardrobe, part of a bedroom suite whose different elements (bed, dressing table, cheval glass, screen) are also in the Musée d'Orsay, consists of two distinct, vertical sections. This is expressed in its rigorous construction, both solid and simple, and in the quality of its composition, which sets off the waxed, mahogany surfaces.
The decoration, sober and almost graphic, consists, on the upper part, in a large, concave curve which runs across the two sections, while the two vertical lines, widening towards the bottom, and curving slightly inwards, divide each section asymmetrically. This design, clearly a favourite of Serrurier-Bovy as it is found in a number of tables and chairs, echoes the torii of the Shinto shrines.
The brass motifs highlight the wardrobe hinges, whose design is both slender and restrained, and succeed in accentuating even further the Japanese character of this piece of furniture.
