Jean Carriès, whose works are well represented at the Musée d'Orsay, was also one of the great ceramicists of his time. This vase is a perfect example of the style adopted by the artist for his most accomplished works in the years 1890-1892: superimposing glazes and run-outs, and a satin finish removing all the shine.
The glaze was applied to a fine, close-grained, matt clay. In those parts left visible, this clay presents a blend of russets, fawns and ochres.
Finally, the shape of the vase reveals the influence of ceramics from the Far East, from which no artist in the second half of the 19th century was immune.
