For some time, Gustave Courbet has been the favoured subject for the different approaches to the new history of art. After much deep analysis - political and social interpretation, biographical readings, sexual interpretation and a return to iconography - it is now time to take a fresh look at this artist. The first day looks at questions of method, while the second is mainly concerned with the historical context. A third day, supported by the Local Council of the Doubs department, is for researchers only, and will be held in Courbet's home region.
