The Répertoire de sculpture française / French Sculpture Census  lists French sculpture dating 1500-1960 in American public collections, whether museums, historic houses, administration buildings, or outdoor space. 7000 sculptures have already been included and are now on line. Specialized resources and study cases can also be found on the website.

The archive and the library were created before the museum opened to the public, and are reference tools for art historians specialising in the second half of the 19th century. These two entities within the research department are responsible for disseminating and promoting the documentary collections through research projects, and encouraging collaboration with other institutions.The Prix du Musée d'Orsay, is an annual award for the publication of a selected thesis.
