In the 19th century, the social rituals of celebrations were revived, and leisure activities became a widespread, although essentially urban, phenomenon: this tour will recall the Paris Opera, ballet and concerts, as well as local dances, funfairs and circuses. The railway system was also expanding at this time, enabling the wealthy to enjoy open-air pleasures (regattas, sea bathing, etc).
The works here provide an example. The museum guide will choose works to illustrate the theme. Only the tours with English-speaking guides are featured here. For other tours see French version of website.
