This festival presents a selection of films set in ancient Rome, ancient Greece or ancient Egypt. Since the 1950s, this epic genre has been known as the "peplum" genre (from the Greek peplos meaning "tunic"). It first appeared in the early years of cinema (the Lumière Brothers and Méliès produced pepla), was developed in Italy between 1910 and 1920 (Cabiria and went on to become a major genre of Hollywood cinema from the 1920s to the 1960s (mainly in the films of David W. Griffith, Fred Niblo, Cecil B. DeMille, William Wyler and Joseph L. Mankiewicz), before returning to Italy in the 50s and 60s with Vittorio Cottafavi and Ricardo Freda, the masters of the Italian peplum.
