Mauritz Stiller
1924. Silent. Sweden
183 min
In central Sweden in the early 19th century, blacksmiths, pastors, army offices and bohemian peasants, brought together in ancient manor houses, provide the backcloth for Gosta Berling’s turbulent love affairs.
When Sjöström left for Hollywood, and before Stiller was to follow in his footsteps, this epic saga was described by Georges Sadoul as “the swansong of Swedish cinema”, containing all its blackness, sensuality and feeling for the beauty of the landscape. This was Greta Garbo’s second film role before she went to the United States with Stiller the following year where she became a star.
