The art of vocal accompaniment

The nineteenth century is characterised by the birth of lied and song. These intimist forms enable performers to express themselves with subtlety. Too often we forget that the shared feelings created in the recital between the soloist and the audience are largely due to the art of the accompanist. Gerald Moore, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s usual pianist, explained that although the accompanist has to know how to be discreet in relation to the soloist, he is also a mediator between the score, the soloist and the audience.

This special cycle aims to recognise the work of the accompanist, whether a pianist or an instrumental ensemble. The complicit understanding between singers and exceptional accompanists can be enjoyed not only in concert, of course, but also through the masterclasses which reveal the full depth of the work of these discreet and outstanding musicians.

Masterclasses

Roger Vignoles, Julius Drake, Michaël Levinas and Helmut Deutsch: the great names in the field of accompaniment come together with the students of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse to share and pass on their consummate art of accompaniment.
In each masterclass, two pianist-singer couples will receive expert advice from one of the leading performers of songs and lieder. As a compulsory exercise, each pianist will work on Mondnacht (Moonlit night), an extract from the Liederkreis op. 39 by Schumann with one of the couples. It is an opportunity for the audience to compare the different approaches of these artists.
To round off the first day, three of our maestros will take part in a round table discussion of their most subtle art and of Gerald Moore's lasting influence.
