The particular emphasis that is placed on the influence of Ingres and the Primitives enables the visitor to position Degas' work in the tradition of the masters. Furthermore, the exhibition brings together a series of dancers and horse racing scenes to demonstrate the extent to which Degas used these subjects to try out categorical variations that were as much, if not more than simple snapshots of real life. "My art has nothing spontaneous about it; it is all reflection", declared Degas; in short, this exhibition aims to highlight the classical dimension of his work.
