Chœur Accentus
Christophe Grapperon
The program: Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Francis Poulenc
A new guest at the Musée d'Orsay auditorium, the Accentus choir, under the direction of Christophe Graperon, has put together a program around street songs, reflecting the great spring 2025 exhibition "L'Art est dans la rue" (Art takes to the streets).
For three centuries, the "cris de Paris" (the cries of Paris), a phrase used to describe the world of street vendors and unskilled tradesmen bustling through the streets of the capital, have inspired literature, iconography, and music. Luciano Berio's Cries of London, which explores the sounds and rhythms of the vendors' cries in the streets of 18th-century London, is therefore a fitting choice. Berio uses modern, experimental vocal techniques, playing with vocal timbre and texture to recreate the vibrant atmosphere of the city. Pieces by Brahms make the perfect addition to the program, adding a folkloric, traditional dimension and highlighting Brahms' love of German popular music. Then we have Poulenc, who brings us simple, candid melodies inspired by popular music, with sophisticated harmonies which are often playful or tender.
Accentus is a leading group in the world of vocal music. This chamber choir founded by Laurence Equilbey 26 years ago has a deep connection to a cappella music, contemporary composition, oratorio, and opera. Accentus performs at the greatest concert halls and festivals in France and across the world.
