Lydia Hoen-Tjore

Christian Grøvlen
The program: Agathe Backer-Grøndahl, Edvard Grieg
After the opening concert of the season, Norwegian pianist Christian Grøvlen is back on stage at the auditorium for a new Concert de midi trente (lunchtime concert) in parallel with the exhibition "Harriet Backer (1845-1932), the music of color". This time, he is accompanied by soprano Lydia Hoen-Tjore and baritone Magnus Ingemund Kjelstad. Together, they explore the repertoire of Agathe Backer-Grøndahl (1847-1907), sister to Harriet Backer and friend of the great composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) whose work also features in the program.
Agathe Backer-Grøndahl is undoubtedly the most important figure of the late 19th-century Norwegian music scene. A student of Hanns von Bulow (1830-1894) and Franz Liszt (1811-1886), she composed around 400 pieces and led a highly successful international career as a pianist until 1903, when, suffering severe hearing loss, she decided to dedicate herself to composition and teaching. With her exquisite melodies and works for the piano, she became known throughout Europe.
Christian Grøvlen is a pianist whose talent has won him numerous awards. He played with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra while he was still a teenager, with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra in 2018, and as a soloist in the Norwegian Opera Orchestra in 2020. He is also music curator at the Kode Museum, Bergen, and a specialist on Agathe Backer-Grøndahl. Lydia Hoen-Tjore is one of Norway's most promising young operatic talents. She was trained at the Academy of the Royal Danish Opera, and is one of its youngest ever graduates. Magnus Ingemund Kjelstad is a young Norwegian baritone, also trained at the Academy of the Royal Danish Opera, where he made his debut in 2017. In 2020, he joined the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo.
