The 19th century witnessed a remarkable increase in the production of plays, operas, operettas and concerts, along with lectures, reviews and what would come to be known as “music hall”.

As a result, more venues than ever before had to be built to host such events and so enable ever-more numerous audiences to enjoy the shows on offer. Architects’ inventiveness knew no bounds when it came to providing cities with ever larger and more beautiful auditoriums, drawing on a long history reaching back to Antiquity.
