Les Soleils, jardin du petit Genevilliers by Gustave Caillebotte, acquired by dation en paiement (exceptional payment of inheritance or transfer taxes by handing over to the State cultural property of high artistic or historical value), enters the Musée d'Orsay collections.

By virtue of its subject, framing and format, this view of the garden by Gustave

The entry of this masterpiece by Caillebotte into the national collections following the Daurelle bequest (three paintings and two pastels) in 2019 and the dation of Paysage à Argenteuil in the same year (deposited with the Baron Gérard museum in Bayeux) strengthens the presence of the artist in the national collections, which currently include only thirteen works by his hand. Long celebrated for his role as a patron of the Impressionists and for the very generous bequest of his collection at his death in 1894, Caillebotte has benefited over the past thirty years from a major effort to reappraise his work by art historians and museums. He is now recognized as a major figure of the Impressionist movement and more broadly of 19th century French painting.

This work has recently taken its rightful place in the Impressionist gallery of the Musée d'Orsay, in a presentation redesigned around the painting.
