For his second year submission ("four studies of details of an ancient monument selected by the student", as specified by the Academy), Boitte chose the Trajan column, a monument that had long attracted the interest of architects, and had served as the model for the Vendôme Column in Paris. He was also no doubt influenced by the fact that in 1861 Napoleon III had ordered a cast of it.
Twenty years later, Boitte was once again called upon to consider the theme of the commemorative column for the competition launched in 1881 for the monument to the National Constituent Assembly of Versailles. On this occasion he proposed an enormous column crowned with a statue representing Liberty.
