Vittore Grubicy di Dragon (1851 - 1920)
Artwork not currently exhibited in the museum

This painting shows a view of Lake Maggiore and the town of Intra from the Miazzina hills. Grubicy once again uses a composition found elsewhere in his paintings, most notably in images from the polyptych entitled Inverno in montagna. Poema panteista [Winter in the Mountains. A Pantheist Poem] (Venice, Galleria Internazionale d'Arte Moderna), produced between 1894 and 1897. Morning was no doubt painted at the same time.
The painter seems to have concentrated on producing a chromatic effect and on reflecting the particular atmosphere of the moment. The painting entered the public collections in 1910, which prevented Grubicy from reworking it in a Divisionist technique and radically changing the style as he did on many occasions with other works. The colours of the painted surface are very vibrant and bright, moving through a chromatic range of great subtlety that changes imperceptibly from shades of green to blue. In counterpoint, unexpected dots of pure pink stand out, and there is an interplay between the phosphorescence on the surface of the lake and the leaves of the trees against the light.
