Louis Baader (1828 - 1920)
Rez-de-chaussée, Salle 24

Here, Baader depicts an episode from the life of Orestes, son of Agamemnon, the mythical king of the Mycenae. In order to avenge the murder of his father by his mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus, Oreste killed the assassins.
Haunted by his guilt and persecuted by the Erinyes, goddesses of vengeance, Orestes appears both transfixed and terrified at the sight of the bodies.
By painting Orestes and Clytemnestra nude, Baader demonstrates his mastery of anatomy to the Academy – an essential skill for a history painter – while delighting the public at the Salon, who were fond of sensual nudity.
