Musée d'Orsay: From Academic Painting to Impressionism (1848-1874)

From Academic Painting to Impressionism (1848-1874)

Encouraged by the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Academic painting (Cabanel, Bouguereau, Gérôme, Bonnat, Laurens, Glaize, etc) dominated for a large part of the 19th century before being challenged by the Realist painters and by young artists who, with Manet, overturned the traditional criteria of good taste and laid the foundations of modern painting.

The works here provide an example. The museum guide will choose works to illustrate the theme. Only the tours with English-speaking guides are featured here. For other tours see French version of website.
