Musée d'Orsay: Vingarne [The Wings]

Vingarne [The Wings]

1916. Silent. Sweden
80 mins

A sculptor meets a young painter who becomes his model. Their friendship is thrown into turmoil when they both fall in love with the same woman.

This is the first adaptation of Herman Berg's novel, and predates Dreyer's Michael (1924). In the novel, Claude Zoret (inspired by Claude Monet) is a painter. Here, he becomes a sculptor with a similar style to Carl Milles. Although we are given very few details, many critics see this film as the first cinematic depiction of homosexual love.
