Musée d'Orsay: Black Narcissus

Black Narcissus

Michael Powell
1943. English, Fr subtitles
100 mins

A young English nun moves to Mopu deep in the Himalayas to run an infirmary. The natural and cultural environment gradually affects the emotions, desires and attitudes of the religious community.

Michael Powell's adventurous spirit often led him to take a very original approach, preferring to reconstruct the Indian settings and shoot the film almost entirely in the studio, in contrast with the realist approach of the time. Underlying the film is an extraordinary sensual potency that makes Powell one of the few English filmmakers to attack puritanism.
