The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

Billy Wilder
1970. English, Fr subtitles
125 mins

Gabrielle Valladon pays a visit to Sherlock Holmes in Baker Street to ask him to find her husband who has disappeared.

Billy Wilder enjoys dismantling the legend of Sherlock Holmes. He emphasises Holmes' cocaine addiction. His fear of woman and the fact that he lives with Watson suggest latent homosexuality. And his genius for deduction is jeopardised by the victim. Nevertheless, Wilder has some affection for his character, and respects the world created by Conan Doyle, reconstructing it in minute detail.
