George Bernard Shaw himself successfully adapted his play for this film 25 years after he wrote it, winning the Oscar for best screenplay in 1939.
Already controversial in 1914 as it did not observe the theatrical convention to end with a marriage, and under pressure from the producer, he changed the ending. In 1956, Shaw’s play was turned into a musical called My Fair Lady, adapted for cinema by George Cukor in 1964.
