Musée d'Orsay: Scrooge

Henry Edward
1935. English, Fr subtitles
78 mins

One Christmas Eve, Scrooge, an old miser, receives a visit from the ghost of his former partner and the three ghosts of Christmas, who have come to help him realise the hollowness of a life motivated purely by financial gain…

This was the first great film adaptation of A Christmas Carol, the Dickens novel that most attracted filmmakers. Certain characters were taken out of the screenplay to highlight the magical aspect of the novel. The influence of German Expressionism can be seen in the film’s beautiful photography, with its wonderful use of darkness and shadows. The film is also notable for its restrained use of special effects: the ghosts are hardly ever seen, revealing their presence mainly through shadows and voices.
