The Innocents

Jack Clayton
1961. English, Fr subtitles
100 mins

In the strange atmosphere of an old manor house, Miss Giddens, governess to Flora and Miles, is concerned about her pupils' behaviour.

The greatest achievement in this adaptation of Henry James' novella is its success in preserving all the book's ambiguity; the subtle direction maintains the mystery to the very end. The beauty of the sets and the black and white photography contribute to creating an atmosphere that is both melancholic and very oppressive.
