An engraver and an illustrator, Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was also a skilled photographer as early as the 1880s, a turning point during which, as the technique became more simple, the medium became accessible to a new category of amateurs. Pictures of Parisian streets, of the cabaret Le Chat Noir or of the Eiffel Tower, scenes of the countryside in Brittany, portraits of his relatives in their family intimacy make up most of his production that demonstrates a high degree of formal liberty.
