Académie Orsay-Royaumont

The triumph of Mélodie and Lied

Les lauréats 2018 de l'Académie Orsay-Royaumont© Musée d'Orsay / Sophie Crépy
In 2018, the Musée d’Orsay partnered with the Royaumont Foundation to found the Académie Orsay-Royaumont. Dedicated to French mélodie and German lied, this academy offers young artists the chance to work with the greatest masters in these disciplines. The museum is not only the setting for these studies, but also serves to amplify them and extend them to other artistic fields. Evening recitals by guest masters are the grand finales of this cycle that also takes the form of Lunchtime concerts and Musical Promenades.

A programme conceived and presented in partnership with the Royaumont Foundation.

The passionate patron of the Académie Orsay-Royaumont, Véronique Gens is one of the greatest performers of French repertoire, on stage and at recitals. It is therefore safe to say that you can follow her lead with your eyes closed, or rather wide open to admire each of her gestures and expressions that express the poetry of the music. This year that marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Berlioz, Véronique Gens will once again be proving what a legendary singer she truly is with her major melody cycle <span class="italiquenoir"Summer Nights.

Franz Schubert
Winterreise, D 911

In terms of the intensity of the internal drama, literary prowess and visionary music, Winterreise [Winter Journey] stands unrivalled, a fundamental masterpiece in the history of lied - and perhaps of all western melody -, a remorseless cycle of the ill-fated lover on the edge of madness. Although many singers have taken their shot, few are equal to the immensity of the challenge. Christoph Prégardien, one of the greatest German tenors, is one of these rare few.

Ranging from tragic outbursts to unbridled comedy, Dame Sarah Connolly has also develop an attuned and melancholic recitative repertoire. For this concert she will be taking us back to the 1900s, crossing the Channel in search of French composers including Cécile Chaminade, before setting a course for Vienna with a mix of post-romanticism and modernity. Hugo Wolff glorifies German poetry, while Zemlinsky investigates the Franco-Belgium symbolism of Maeterlinck.
