The Musée d'Orsay paid homage to hospital architecture by organising a retrospective about the buildings built by the Paris Assistance Publique in the 19th century.
It uncovered the dynamism of an administration that succeeded in correcting the defects of its hospital map, by augmenting the number of its units and balancing the share of specialised hospitals against that of general hospitals.
The administration of hospitals had become one of the most active of Paris' institutions in the field of building. Beyond the sanitary and medical necessities, the Assistance Publique met the deeper needs of a developing society, renewing its social practices and its lifestyle.
Many architectural maps illustrate this evolution, together with compositions and portraits that show the main actors and the striking events of this evolution.
