This ballet evokes the choreographic styles of the three countries dear to Balanchine: Emerald for France and its dancers according to Degas; Ruby for America and its musical comedy, and finally, Diamond for Russia and the splendour of its ballet.
The sets and costumes were designed by the couturier Christian Lacroix.
