Dessinateur industriel, décorateur, botaniste et théoricien. Etudie à la School of Design dés 1847. Passionné d'art japonais, il séjourne au Japon de 1876 à 1877, publie en 1882 "Japan its Architecture, Art and Art Manufactures." et contribue à la diffusion en Europe des principes de l' esthétique japonaise.
