Le premier atelier de bois courbé est fondé en 1819 à Boppard-am-Rheim par Michael Thonet (Boppard-am-Rheim 1796-Vienne 1871) qui met en place des procédés pour courber le bois vers 1830-1835. Privilège impérial accordé en 1842. Société établie en 1853 à Vienne par Michael Thonet au nom de ses 5 fils, sous la raison sociale Gebrüder Thonet : Franz (1820-1898), Michael (1824-1902), August (1829-1910), Josef (1830-1887) et Jacob (1841-1929). Brevet d'exclusivité pour la fabrication du bois courbé accordé jusqu'en 1869. 1923, fusion avec Mundus, nouvelle raison sociale Thonet-Mundus. 1938 : redevient indépendante sous le nom de Gebrüder Thonet, en la possession de la famille Thonet.
