The program: Aristide Bruant, Marcel Legay, Emile Goudeau, Jules Jouy, Erik Satie, Claude Debussy
On the eve of the French Revolution, writer Beaumarchais predicted that "le mur murant Paris rend Paris murmurant" (the wall walling Paris makes Paris murmur). One hundred years and several revolutions later, the wall is freeing itself from its sinister past. It is opening up, revealing its desire to join the modern world, allowing itself to be decorated with new banners which reign with great mastery. Mural art and urban artforms break boundaries in a free, fabulous polyphony. You can stick anything to the walls, say anything. This is unpretentious - yet decidedly colorful - entertainment. Entertainment worthy of the "Belle époque", that Golden Age of cabarets and café-concerts, themselves flourishing centers for entertainment and popular culture.
You can perform anything, say anything, sing anything. In the enchanted city of Paris, the city of La Bohème, singer Aristide Bruant, tragedian Sarah Bernhardt, and painter Toulouse Lautrec put on a performance that goes beyond the stage, beyond the walls of the museum. Advertising is on the move, and art is following its lead, emulating it. We no longer ask the walls to whisper; these artists give them a voice so that they can sing about the spectacular city of Paris!
In this recital, Chat Noir Addict (Black Cat Addict), the Lunaisiens, along with charming opera singer Lucile Richardot, take a playful look at a suite of historical songs which conjure up the Paris of the Belle époque, of the Chat Noir and the Folies Bergère, of this period when one century was ending and another beginning, where art was becoming more accessible and trying at all costs to seduce an audience who would be the only ones to decide whether the walls were telling the truth or not!
