Quatuor Parisii; François Dumont, piano

The Quatuor Parisii and pianist François Dumont have been inspired by Manet's Spanish paintings, evoking the world of bullfighting, to pay homage to composer Joaquin Turina, himself fascinated by this world of “gold and blood.”
.
Manet painted several works depicting the rituals of bullfighting as well as the death of the bullfighter, some after his trip to Spain in 1865, others before, a testament to his admiration for Velasquez and Goya - some of his detractors going so far as to claim plagiarism! In the following century, Joaquin Turina drew on this inexhaustible tradition to compose his Bullfighter’s Prayer, written for a guitar ensemble and transcribed here for quartet and piano, mirroring the more classical works composed between Madrid and Paris.
