Like its Haussman-style façades and the Eiffel Tower, the metro entrances designed by Hector Guimard (1867-1942) are part and parcel of Paris’ image, not just in France itself but well beyond its borders. Musée d'Orsay presents the drawings preparatory to creation of these entrances with their altogether unique aesthetic.

After an inconclusive competition held in 1899, the Compagnie Générale du Métropolitain requested Hector Guimard to design the entrances to its future stations. The architect came up with some truly original, almost organic designs. The drawings presented in this exhibition bear remarkable witness to the creation of works that have become emblematic of the capital. Some of them will be exhibited for the first time, following a restoration campaign carried out in 2022-2023.
