This retrospective devoted to Mallarmé offers a tour at once chronological and thematical of his work, from the first sonnets, which still belong to Baudelaire's orbit, to his ultimate piece, A Throw of the Dice, which decisively upset the prevailing poetical rules and which contained the seeds of the Book that was to come. As a counterpoint, Mallarmé's relationship with his contemporaries, literators and artists, is recalled through his portraits and his collections.
